Blodeuwydd

This painting is inspired by the story of Blodeuwydd from the old Wesh legends belonging to the Mabinogion. In the legend Blodeuwydd meaning "flower face" was born out of flowers. Having cheated on her husband, as punishment for what she had done, he turned her into an owl. Telling her that every other bird would fear her and thus she would have to live the rest of her life in solitude.

Here I have re-interpreted the legend as mankind has cheated on nature. The broken chain around her neck symbolises a divorce from nature, as she has been seduced by gold. Trapped in her gilded cage, nature only exists in her memory for all eternity.
